Book Summary

What would you do to get your happily ever after?

Libby Saunders, who spent the first seventeen years of her life as an ugly duckling, bleaches her hair and drops forty pounds in order to get her fairytale ending. Once she evolves into a beautiful swan, the handsome princes are tripping each other’s royal steeds in order to get a date with her. But while the princes in fairy tales may be perfect gentlemen, Libby finds that her real life princes tend to be somewhat less than perfect. Actually, they tend to be a bunch of two-timing jerks.

Will Kaplan, the roommate of Libby’s latest boyfriend, is definitely not her idea of a handsome prince. He’s missing a cleft in his chin, he doesn’t have a British accent or even a French or Italian accent, and he rides a wheelchair rather than a white stallion. But the more Libby gets to know Will, the more she starts to wonder if handsome princes are really all they’re cracked up to be. And maybe a nice, ordinary drake is the only one who can give a former ugly duckling the happily ever after she’s been waiting for.

Will is disabled and in a wheelchair. He sees Lily while enjoying a night out and buys her a drink. Lily thinks Jude, Will’s handsome British roommate, sent her the drink. Despite being told by Jude that Will bought her the drink, she ignores Will and chats up Jude. Later, she goes back to their apartment and spends the night with Jude.

It was easy to predict the ending. Once they became friends, I knew somehow Lily would start to see Will was the better man. What I could not forgive was being forced to watch Lily parade around as Jude’s girlfriend for most of the book.

Lily is vapid and shallow. She cares about labels and looks. She likes Jude because he has a British accent and turns heads wherever they go. She excuses his flirtatious behavior and acts like it’s normal for him to not give her his cell phone number. (She only has a landline number.) What really pissed me off was when she set Will up with her friend and didn’t tell the friend Will was disabled. That created an awkward evening that could have been avoided. Will deserved better than Lily.
